Karaja rugs originate from the village of Karadja in the East Azerbaijan region of northwestern Iran. They are among the most distinctive of all Persian runner rugs, traditionally woven in long, narrow formats ideal for hallways and corridors. Karaja rugs are recognised for their repeating medallion designs, rich red grounds, and intricate geometric borders — a style that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
